National Semiconductor’s South Portland Maine manufacturing facility processes eight-inch silicon wafers using CMOS and BiCMOS technologies. The Maine-made integrated circuits (chips) are embedded in many consumer products including flat panel displays, scanners, DVDs, personal computers, and wireless communication devices. The factory operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day and employs 600 employees including engineers, technicians, and support personnel. National has operated in Maine since 1987. The eight-inch factory opened in 1997, and is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001.
